Stop School Bullying In Middle And High Schools
July 19, 2010 | Leave a Comment
In life you will face scenarios where you will be challenged to stand up for people who do not have a voice. For some its animals that get mistreated by their owners, for others its children who face abuse in the home and in family cases, it’s that relative who is undocumented and wants nothing more than to be left alone.
It was the ninth grade and my friends and I were put in a physical education class with sophomores, juniors and seniors. This was a recipe for disaster but nonetheless, we were going to attempt to get along. It was obvious who the freshmen were and who the seniors were and we freshmen were the ones trying to stay out of everyone’s way.
One day while changing before our physical activities my friend (let’s call him Eke) accidently stepped on a pair of Nike Air Jordans that belonged to a senior. The senior got angry and started to cuss out my friend Eke.
Eke had always been a follower, very shy and timid, and had no idea he’d done anything wrong. I could see that the senior was planning on beating him up, so I stood between the two and told him I wasn’t going to let him hurt my friend. It was just an accident. We exchanged words, he shoved me and I shoved him, but he did back off. Even though he’d said some threatening words to Eke, he knew that messing with Eke meant messing with me.
Lesson learned: Stand up for people who don’t have a voice. This is how politicians get noticed and eventually get appointed into office. This is also how a leader gets followers. Today, Eke will tell you that I am like his personal hero for standing up for him that day. It just so happens that after that day, nobody ever messed with me and if they tried, I had ten to fifteen people ready to lay a smack down on my behalf.
When you stand up for other people who you know aren’t going to stand up for themselves, you still need to watch your own personal safety. Remember to get permission from an adult or parents to make sure you have their support when you make this stand. After being picked on throughout the middle years of school, I never wanted it to happen to anyone else. I ultimately gained more confidence because of it.
High school and middle school students can benefit from a school bullying speaker to talk to them about the bullying consequences, and what it means to stand up for each other. A school bullying video can challenge a whole school to put an end to bullying on campus. Young people should feel safe when they attend their classes.

The Benefits Of Active Play In Child Development
July 13, 2010 | Leave a Comment
These days, most parents know that children sitting in front of the television or playing video games all day long are not going to benefit in terms of their overall health. The more active a child is the more that they can develop their minds and bodies as a whole. Physical activity such as running, jumping and using their hand and eye coordination is a great way to ensure that their development is getting a great head start.
Children can enjoy active play indoors as wells as outdoors. However, outdoor play gives them a wider range of options for play areas, as well the room they need for running and other physical play. Using balls, trikes, bikes and other outdoor play toys can bring a lot of fun and excitement to the world of child development. Active play also allows the child to stretch his or her thinking and behavior in everyday life situations. It also helps them develop coordination, and practicing their everyday basic skills will become easier with a greater number and variety active situations. Hand and eye coordination is an important series of steps that children need to take before the age of five, and being active will make this easier for them. Climbing on a jungle gym, swinging on a swing set, running in the playground and using all of their motor skills is essential to their development.
Solo and group play
Active play, especially outdoors, allows a child to freely make noise and thereby use forms of self-expression that would likely be restricted indoors. Many times, parents are afraid to let their small children brave the outdoors, especially alone, but being outside is the best way to let them make noise and do the things that they cannot do in the house or in the classroom. You can gather a group of your children’s friends together and have them do some activities and games together. You can get together with other parents and form a playgroup that gets together on different days of the week, and even trade chaperone days with other parents. This can help you with time planning, too, as you can have time to do shopping, clean your house or other get other things done while your child is playing with the group.
Studies have shown that children that suffer from ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) function better when they are active in a green, outdoor setting. The studies have shown that the greener and more open the setting, the less severe the attention deficit is for the duration and some time afterward. In addition, active play and activities can reduce the stress in a child. With both structured and unstructured play, children can express themselves and work out the emotional stresses of everyday life.
Engaging all five senses
Children are also capable of learning faster when they are subjected to all aspects of active play and hands-on activity. The more a child is allowed to lead an inactive lifestyle with television and video games, the more likely it is that they will carry these habits into their adult lives and therefore perpetuate the same inactive lifestyle as they had as children. In addition, they will likely pass it along to their own children. Allowing a child to be freely active and play with other children will nurture them for the future and thus build the foundation for confidence, competence and productivity as an adult. They will learn to be free and natural, in both mind and body, in responsible and healthy ways.
Touch, taste, sight, smell and sound are all key elements in active play, as well. The more a child can use their senses in active play, the better the development of all their functions will proceed. Being outdoors as mentioned before is a key element in developing all five senses. When children are active outside, they can touch the grass, plants, water and all kinds of things in nature, and feel the kiss of the sun. They can smell the fresh air and the fragrances of flowers, taste the fruit of an apple or peach tree, see the animals in the park and get a completely new perspective on how they can relate to the great outdoors.
The world that children live in today is becoming increasingly complex and can be a bit scary, too. However, the fact remains that children need to play and be active whether they are inside or outside. The more you allow your children the freedom to express themselves through active play, the more you will empower their minds and bodies to expand beyond the constraints of the house and classroom.

The best way to promote a green lifestyle is when children are young and impressionable.

Infant Development And What You Need To Know
July 6, 2010 | Leave a Comment
The first year of a babies life the infant development changes very quickly. When your baby is two months you will see them beginning to laugh and smile. They should also start to make cute noises. If you lay them on their stomachs they can hold their head and chest up for a short amount of time. Babies can also watch your movements with their eyes and turn when they hear a noise at two months.
Your baby will not be the same as all other babies because each baby is an individual with their own personalities. There are some babies that are calm and quite but there are also babies that need much more attention because they cry quite often. Some babies may be content to just sit in the baby swing while another baby will cry the whole time they are in the swing.
Do not worry, you will learn your babies temperament and what he or she likes and dislikes. You should also not worry if your baby is not doing the things other children his or her age are doing. Some babies take a little longer to learn things than others. This does not mean that something is wrong with them. If you are concerned you could always have the pediatrician check your baby out.
At four months old your baby should be able to roll over and sit with support. You can usually try putting pillows around the baby at this age so they can sit up on their own. They just need a little help to keep from tipping over. The baby should also be able to hold on to small toys like a rattle.
At six months old babies should be able to imitate some speech sounds. They will not necessarily be talking yet but they will start trying to. They can also reach for objects and sit without the need of support.
At nine months your baby will be pulling themselves up and standing while holding on to things. Your baby should also be able to walk as long as you hold their hands the entire time. It is important for you to walk with your baby this way to help them learn to walk.
Eating with the family is an important part of infant development. This is where high chairs for babies become handy. The Stokke high chair brand grow with the infant.
Toys And Kids
July 1, 2010 | Leave a Comment
All children are the same and you will find that a child loves to play with imaginary games just as much as they will enjoy an expensive toy from a boutique. It is important that your kids have toys as they are designed to improve and stimulate their development such as with motor skills and co-ordination. Many of the ones made in present time are mass produced and made from substandard quality materials which break quickly.
Wooden and tin toys such as the ones our grandparents would have had are almost extinct which is a pity because they were built to last a long time. They would not break easily, if at all, and many lasted several decades even. Comparatively, the ones on our shelves in stores today, break soon after we purchase them because of their poor quality.
It will pay off if you rather investigate which name brands are the best and purchase play items for your kids which are durable and will not break after a few weeks use. Many of us are guilty of purchasing cheaper imitation brands which satisfy our kid’s needs, but only for a short period until they break.
You should also make sure that you purchase a well rounded selection of toys for your kids which are suitable for their ages. Toys which encourage stimulation and interactive thinking are always a bonus. Puzzles are great because they help to develop your child’s problem solving skills. Educational ones such as map games or scrabble are also an excellent choice as they will help to improve your child’s knowledge and memory capacity.
If you are looking for good quality name brands then go with Fisher Price or Lego. We all know Lego’s from when we were children and they are still popular today which says something about the product. LeapFrog is also renowned for producing great educational and instructive toys.
Keeping kids active is another essential part of their development which will help to keep them healthy and fit. Scooters and bicycles are good choices as they help to develop balance, co-ordination and depth perception. Mini Kick and Radio Flyer have some cute scooters on the market and are quite popular too.
In summary, purchase smartly and carefully and do not just go out and buy any old toy to distract your child. Spend your money wisely by buying a good quality, educational toy that is built to last.

Necessary Things To Remember When Potty Training Your Youngster
June 29, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Parents can keep the drama associated with potty training their kids while they are traveling by just making a few easy preparations in advance.
Bring along your child’s potty chair on the trip. This will be essential in maintaining their potty lessons. If and when those emergencies come about, all you need to do is pull over and put the potty chair on the seat of the car. Don’t forget to bring liners or plastic bags with you in order to line their chair. This will make clean up fast and easy and improve the overall situation.
Don’t forget to also bring extra toilet paper or diaper wipes with you on the trip. Also, use what you normally use at home, because your child will appreciate the consistency.
Take with you the things that thy are used to, and you will have one less thing to worry about in terms of potty training. Long trips can be hard on everyone in the car, and bringing some of those comforts from home helps a lot.
Another thing to think about is getting some disposable training pants for the ride. There are so many different kinds to select from and it can help protect the car as well as the child if an accident does happen.
Try and keep the amount your kid has to drink in the car to a minimum. Don’t let them get dehydrated, but don’t encourage them to have to go to the bathroom every ten minutes either. It’s not always easy to find a quick place to pull over.
Plan on making regular stops for stretching and bathroom breaks at rest areas along the way. Also, don’t be shy about bringing the child’s potty chair with you to the bathroom. They often would be more comfortable using their own than someone else’s.
Be prepared for your child to have an accident or two in their potty training. Be patient that they will learn along they way. But traveling can be stressful for adults, but especially hard on kids some times.
Once you arrive at your final destination, remember to give your child lots of encouragement and positive reinforcement with his potty training. This will help you be successful on your potty training adventure.
