How Electricity Is Produced From Wind Energy
February 8, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Wind energy has been used for many years as individuals have used wind power for sailing, wind mills for manufacturing and pumping water and more recently conversion into electricity using wind turbines. Wind power is a renewable energy that is considered a good option instead of burning fossil fuels. Of all the renewable energy sources it is the most efficient and you only need a light breeze to produce electricity.
The very first uses of wind for energy was in the form of wind mills and sailing as people have been using wind for more than thousands of years to propel ships. Windmills have also been used for many years for milling grain as well as pumping water for irrigation. These irrigation windmills was the main reason that farming and ranching could occur in the US, as there are vast stretches of land that do not have ready access to water.
The very first usage of wind to create electricity occurred in 1888. The first wind turbine was used to create hydrogen in the 1890s but it was soon converted to producing electricity. Small wind turbines are used to provide power to rural buildings and today there are larger wind farms that are being used to produce electricity for large networks. What is known as the modern wind industry really began in 1979 when wind turbines began to be regularly produced.
Wind occurs because the surface of the earth is not evenly heated, as the poles get less sunlight than the equator. This causes cooled and heated air to move which in turn produces wind. It is projected that the amount of power that could be harnessed form the wind is more than the human population currently uses. So just think about having almost cost free power.
The amount of power that is generated by the wind is dependent on the speed and as the wind speed doubles the amount of power produced increases eight fold. However there is a cap as wind turbines can only go so fast and generate so much energy. You do not need high winds at all time though as a lot of energy can still be produced with 15 mph breezes. As such, wind power is a valuable method for alternative energy.
The main issue with wind energy is storage as wind power cannot be dispatched at different times but needs to be used immediately. Many companies have looked into different types of batteries, storing it within the energy grid and even hydroelectricity. Many times surplus energy from domestic wind turbines are fed back into the electrical grid and the energy company will purchase this energy and you will receive electricity credits.
A wind turbine used to collect the power of wind will contain a rotor shaft, gearbox and brake assembly. Generally within a wind farm the different turbines are interconnecting for power collection and communication networking. Wind energy uses induction generators to collect the power and change it to electricity.
The best types of generators are doubly fed machines as they will function when errors occur within the grid. You need to be aware of the power factor, dynamic behavior and frequency constancy when a system fault should occur.
Wind power should be thoroughly considered in order to promote a greener society. Educate your children to become future scientists by purchasing them science lab equipment.
Tips For Using Solar Power

With recent tax incentives for solar power a lot of people have been researching to find out if they qualify. The easy answer is yes you will qualify for the tax incentives if you have a system installed. It tends to be a bit more complex than that however. The systems may be more expensive than most can afford even with the tax incentives.
This is energy generated by the sun. To harness that energy you need a special system in place that will transfer sunlight into power that will run the electrical devices in your home. These systems usually consist of panels and converters. They must be installed by licensed professionals for safety reasons. You local electrical company may have personnel on hand as well.
The do it yourself kits look like something I would love to try if only as a science project for my son. These promise that anyone can do this but I have a hard time believing I could set up a system like this. Any time electricity is involved there is also a certain amount of risk. Fires, explosions, and electrocution all come to mind.
I have no doubt that solar power is the way to go if you can. Not only can this cut your electric bill but it is also earth friendly. In years to come we may well see the end of fossil fuel use in countries around the world. This fuel simply can’t last forever and alternatives must be found.
One of the great things about energy from the sun is that it can be used in combination with other energy sources. This means that you can have your normal power hooked up and when there is no sun, even for days at a time, you will still have power. This makes it very stable and you never need to worry about being without power.
At least one site did mention the need for permits. This may be a very complex project and you will need to do some research before trying any do it yourself kits. There are special boxes needed and it sounds fairly complex.
Some of the products that run on solar power are nice and you don’t need a special system installed. The outdoor lights look really great. They are easy to install and no cords to run or trip over. The cars are still a long way from being marketable though.
If you are thinking about going with solar energy then check all local laws regarding this and at least get professional advice before you begin. Keep in mind that any time you work with any type of electricity proper precautions must be taken and safety should always be your first priority.
Solar energy will no doubt be more widely available in the near future. Prices may come down a lot in years to come. If you can afford to go with this now then you could save a lot of money. One day they may even have solar power companies that actually charge us for solar power.
Solar power provides an efficient and environmentally friendly source for energy. In order to promote a greener society, wind power should also be considered as an alternative option.
Smart Meters- Figuring Out if they help Save Money
January 8, 2010 | Leave a Comment
If you haven’t heard about smart meters they are used to transmit information without any manually reading. The idea is that these electronic power meters are to help us save tons of money because they offer more accuracy and overall savings that the big power companies are supposed pass on to us. The question is whether or not they can really do it. Some believe it’s just a way to help the electric companies save more money. So today we want to look at smart meters and who will actually benefit from them.
Soon you will be able to find these electricity meters in the United States. It’s said that we will be able to save all kinds of energy when we do. Right now they are only found in a small fraction of the 3,000 utility companies across the country. We have heard they are already in Ontario, and will be across the country soon.
What you will find is that smart meters will take the place of regular power meters. Being able to send the data by radio signal will be essential. The power company will then get the data and actually send signals back to the meter. The end result will be no more meter readings that need to be done, and there won’t be anymore delays in your bill. So the tracking will be much easier, which turns into more savings for them and eventually more for you.
The pricing setup is pretty standard throughout the industrial users. In fact, it wasn’t until 2005 that the government suggested that utilities be built around demand-response pricing. The good news is, by 2010 there should be over 40 million smart meters here.
So to answer your question, we believe it’s going to help all of us save tons of money down the road. However, until we actually see how it works, we can only hope at this point. There will be nothing like seeing that your bill is low and thinking; “Okay, today would be a great day to do some more laundry or cook a great meal in the oven.” There are many scenarios we could share, but being able to see live results will be very beneficial to both the power companies and customers just like you.

The Future (And The Present) Of Green Energy
January 7, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Making the switch to using more green energy is about more than just putting in your own personal effort to make a better world today. Green energy is also something which it’s apparent will be an important part of the global energy picture in the future. Today, we’ll talk a little about green energy and why it matters both today and down the road. The more you know, the better you’ll be prepared to make good choices about your own energy use.
Essentially, green energy refers to energy which meets our current needs without depriving future generations of the ability to do the same. These are sustainable, renewable sources of energy - unlike fossil fuels which while technically renewable, are being depleted at an ever-increasing rate and take millions of years to be formed naturally. However, even the non-renewable energy sources in use today are certain to continue being important for the foreseeable future as we slowly move towards greater use of green energy technologies.
While there may be some disagreement about whether some energy sources are sustainable or green, there are others which there is general consensus on like wind power, solar energy, geothermal power, tidal energy and biofuels. Most would also agree that technologies which are able to improve the efficiency of existing energy technologies should also be considered to be green energy after a fashion.
Some hold up nuclear power as a sustainable energy source, though a great many people worry about the problem of safely disposing of waste products from nuclear plants, especially in the US and other countries where breeder reactors are not in use. Others are skeptical that the planet’s reserves of uranium are large enough to make nuclear power viable over the long run.
The most important things in determining the sustainability of an energy source or technology are renewability and efficiency. These are the factors the world has to look closely at in order to make a smoother transition to the use of more renewable energy sources. Since there is a limit to how much green energy can be produced, the challenge is to produce energy from renewable sources while improving their efficiency.
Moving towards a more sustainable energy model means we’ll need to do more than just change where our energy comes from. We also have to change how we use it and reduce the amount used to deliver vital services and goods. Fortunately, being green also helps us save money. There are many different options, as well. The benefits of becoming greener about our energy use are huge.
It’s important to make smart decisions about green energy, however. After all, many things are advertised as green, but may be problematic in the long run. One example is biodiesel and ethanol fuels. Mostly derived from corn and soybeans, these fuels have their limits. We can only grow so much without causing food shortages in other parts of the world, and intensive agriculture can be bad for the earth.
What does that mean for the average person trying to make green choices? It’s pretty simple, actually. We just have to be willing to do a little bit of research and think hard about the choices we’re making. Don’t just believe labels and propaganda - learn about your options and their effects, and choose the best one for you. It’s worth it in the long run!

Every month when that electricity bill slides under your door, you feel that hole being drilled in your pocket. The electricity bills these days are huge! The time has arrived where we should consider taking electricity into our own hands, and taking measures to reduce the electricity bill. We would like to share some tips with you and help you save money by lowering your electricity bill.
You should discuss the importance of saving electricity with your family members. If they seem to not take it serious reward them with a treat if they helped with saving electricity each month. Suggest to them ways to save electricity like switching off lights or taking a sort bath or shower. Also tell them to switch off all the appliances if they don’t use it, even if they are only gone for 10 minutes. It seems like nothing but every little bit helps.
One should plan to invest smartly on power. Replace all the incandescent bulbs present in the house with compact fluorescent light or those CFL bulbs. These bulbs consume less electricity as they consume less power.
Buy the energy saver gadgets that are available in the market. Such gadgets will monitor the intake of the entire power supply in your house and makes you take decision on how to control the usage.
Don’t assume that a rise in the electricity bill is due to all the appliances you own. The truth is that the appliances that are turned ON are the problem, so only monitor them and see where you can save some electricity.
Do take some effort to control the following items regularly because they are the ones that consumes the most power:
1.) If you have an old computer, switch off the monitor when you are not using it as old CRT monitors use large amounts of electricity. 2.) Only use the washing machine when it is loaded at 100% capacity. 3.) Turn the geyser off when you are not using it. 4.) Never use the air conditioner when you are not forced to. It consumes a lot of electricity. 5.) Be sure not to use typical electronic items regularly that consume a lot of power.
If you are very serious in your effort to reduce your power bill, you should consider into using energy saving guides. These guides show you how to produce your own home made electricity by building solar panels and wind turbines. Many guides exist and it would be smart if you make use of them!

Solar Energy Made Easy And Simple
December 22, 2009 | Leave a Comment
Alternative forms of power are becoming an important factor in the earth’s future, especially with all the worry and debates going on about global warming. Here are some facts on how solar energy works. A non-mechanical gadget, a solar cell, is made up of silicon alloys that help it convert energy into electricity.
Thousands and thousands of photons make up solar rays that reach earth. These photons hold different amounts of energy that correspond with their matching patterns on the solar scale. Solar cells pull on this energy and when electrons hit the surface of the cell they either go straight through, reflect, or absorb into the device.
In order to produce energy, enough of the photons have to be absorbed so as to gain a certain amount of electricity. When that happens the electrons are dislodged from the atoms. Whether or not the solar cell has received a certain type of treatment, then the more receptive it will be to any wandering electrons floating around.
Negatively charged electrons migrate towards the surface then the imbalanced charge between the two sides of the cell turns the cell into a battery. One side with a positive charge and the other with a negative so that when both sides are connected through external means, a plug for instance, then electricity is produced and begins to flow.
When the two sides are connected by external sources, electricity gets produced and begins to flow. A solar cell can be anywhere from 0. F inches to 4 and one cell can produce 1through 2 watts of power, which isn’t enough to run our smallest electronic contraptions. At least not by itself, which is why they usually come by the dozens unless inserted in a small device like a night light, outdoor lamp, etc.
The data gotten from these electronic signals is then moved to an acquisition system where they’ll be stored to be checked on an intermittent basis. The electrical distribution panel sends energy from the solar cells and combines it with other electricity, then routes it through a building to power any device that’s consuming energy.
Solar energy is quick and efficient and because of that it is one way you can be sure to lower your monthly electricity bill.

Power Deregulation In Texas: Benefits For Everyone
December 19, 2009 | Leave a Comment
In 2002 the Texas legislature deregulated the retail electricity industry operating within the state. The lawmakers knew they were taking a big step when they did it. Several other states which deregulated their power industry at about the same time are currently investigating adding regulations back into their electricity industry. Texas has never regretted the deregulation, however, and retail and wholesale electricity will certainly remain competitive in Texas even though electricity wires and poles remain regulated. The fact is, ending the monopolies of the utilities has been a great gift to businesses and consumers throughout the state. Texas lawmakers feel that deregulation has made the entire state stronger.
According to research economist M. Ray Perryman, Ph.D, the consumers, business and governments that have switched over providers have saved upwards of 815 million dollars over what they would have spent during the course of a single year. For instance, during 2002, the state itself spent about 20 billion dollars in electricity, while the state’s five deregulated small town services areas and residential service areas only accounted for 12 billion dollars of that year’s energy expenditure in the end.
Similarly, Dr. Perryman estimated that the deregulation put more than 11,000 jobs on the market at a time when the jobs were sorely needed. With an expectation that the need for these jobs would grow, there was also the figure that this gave Texans an extra 2 billion dollars to put into the economy thanks to the increased discretionary income. Similarly, there would be better productivity through lower power costs and impressive effects that would continue to branch out from this. With figures like this, there are a number of different options that companies can now explore. This is something that many companies never had the expense accounts to take on in previous years.
It is interesting to look at where the switches in Texas energy companies are taking place. Private residents are not really interested in changing their retail electricity providers when they are offered prices that are just barely competitive. The bigger businesses, however, are clearly noticing the opportunities to save money provided by deregulation. The energy costs of some businesses range between five and ten percent of their total operating expenses. If companies can lower their electricity costs by switching providers they will save money in a way that previously was unavailable. The potential savings open up an impressive array of opportunities for these businesses, includiing business expansion, hiring new workers and additional operations.
Although the wholesale energy market still must be addressed, it is quite clear that Texas as a state has benefitted from its deregulation of electricity. If you are someplace where you can see the ways you could benefit from the state’s deregulation of electricity, you will find several areas you can invest in which have never been available to you in the past.

Plan How To Get Efficient Home Heating
December 18, 2009 | Leave a Comment
The U.S. is located at a geographic location that encompasses a vast range in temperature, so you can expect that energy costs vary as much as the geography. With this in mind, many home owners seek to find new and effective ways to increase the efficiency of their home.
Increase The Efficiency Of The Home You Have Now
For the average person there are only a few ways they are willing to work on to increase the efficiency of their home. Preventing the infiltration of cold or cool air is the easiest way. Tightening up air gaps and preventing the air from flowing in is the easiest way to save on your heating bill. It isn’t always enough to take the precautionary measures of sealing air gaps around windows and door, you also have to take care of outlets and any recessed lights your home may have.
You heated air is delivered in big metal tubes called “ducts”. If there are air leaks in the heating ducts of your home, you will have a higher energy bill and your furnace will have a shorter life span due to a higher work load on it. To repair them is easy enough. Simply visually inspect the ducts and make any necessary repairs with duct tape.
Making sure your home is insulated well is also another important part of energy efficiency. Using the appropriately sized furnace and air conditioning will help you too. The Department of Energy has a map that shows the optimum insulation for any geographic area in the U.S. so following those guidelines will also increase your homes energy efficiency. While getting any updated utilities installed in your home, make sure to hire a knowledgeable and reputable contractor or you may have to have the work done again.
Plan For The Highest Degree Of Success
When it comes to efficiency in a home, the most successful phase is in the planning stage, when you can address any concern before it takes a lot of work to correct. Using sunlight to add heat to your home is a great idea that does take some situating on the lot in order to do. When factoring in the sunlight, trees and eaves, it is easy to figure out how you can gain the most you can in energy savings. Now, factoring in your floor plan to accommodate for the desired energy saving via sunlight should be easier and you are well on your way to making a great and energy efficient home.
Using the natural lay of the land and strategically planting trees around your home can have a two-fold effect. The first effect is that your home is shaded in the summer so that the sun doesn’t heat it up too much, and in the winter the leaves will drop off and allow the heating rays of the sun right into your windows. Now, keep in mind, that is if you use deciduous trees. To incorporate evergreen trees remember to plan on using them as windbreaks or only in areas you will need shade.

Harness The Might Of The Wind For Your Energy!
December 11, 2009 | Leave a Comment
The increase in demand in the energy market simply isn’t being matched by the out put possible in our current electrical grid system. This means we need to look for alternative ways to generate electricity using solar or window power installations.
Harnessing the power of wind is a real no brainer as it is the simplest form or energy creation we have available to us. But of course, like any other alternative energy system, it will take some time before it becomes a true money saver. To setup your own windmill on your own property, you simply need a big enough piece of ground to set up the foundation of the windmill. You really only need even a slight wind average to generate power with a windmill. You can generate electricity with even a slight breeze in most cases.
In setting up a windmill the main concern are the initial costs. Putting a windmill together piece mail could be the cheapest way you could acquire one. These are the basic steps you need to follow in order to set up a windmill in your home. Get a very good plan and keep in mind the energy quantity you need your windmill to generate. You are better off to purchase the highest quality products when you buy materials in order to avoid having to do more replacements later. Before you purchase any components, make sure to compare the prices so that you will remain in your budget.
Every windmill schematic that you hope to use must include these upgrades:
Get illustrations: It is always easier when you have a picture or a drawing to refer to in order to understand the next steps. If the windmill project has illustrations, than you will understand it more easily and you will be able to visualize it.
Keep the language succinct: Having to sort through complicated jargon will not make your project any easier to finish.
Descriptions of the components: the home made windmill must be providing detailed textual and visual descriptions. Don’t end up regretting this by missing it at a crucial time.
Information specific to your area: Choose the best equipment that you can get. If you are setting up the windmill in another country make sure to respect all the regulations there, otherwise the equipment is useless. Rent or buy your equipment by consulting the installation guide that will come with you windmill.
These are just some of the guidelines you need to follow in order to set up a homemade windmill.
