The History Of Destin Florida
July 18, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Destin is located on the Emerald Coast of Florida, in Okaloosa County. The city styles itself “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” and claims to have the largest fishing vessel fleet in the state of Florida. Destin is known for its white beaches and emerald-colored waters. Located on the north side of the Gulf of Mexico, the temperatures in Destin range from warm (65F) in January to hot (91F) in July.
Destin is named after Captain Leonard Destin, a New London (Conn.) fishing master, who settled in the area in 1850. He built a New England colonial home at the location of the Monroe Point military reservation. Captain Destin and his descendants fished the area for decades.
The first fish camps sprung up on the Moreno Point Military Reservation that was sold off by the government to private ownership. By 1908, there were homes, churches and at least eighteen fish camps dotting the coast; each separate, but all sharing one common thread - fishing.
Homer Jones, John Maltezos, “Uncle Billy” Marler and, of course, Leonard’s sons were among the first fisherman to scour local waters for the bounty of the Gulf. Each has become a “local legend” of sorts in the now famous little fishing village.
Maltezos, originally from Greece, owned businesses in what is now Milton, FL (north of Pensacola). His properties consisted of a restaurant, general store and a dance pavilion. But in 1922, he and his family moved to Moreno Point and Maltezos became a well-known boat builder. His most famous vessel, “The Primrose,” now sits in the Destin Historical Museum.
‘Uncle Billy’ Marler is probably the most well-known historical character. He moved to the East Pass in 1879 to fish alongside Captain Destin. He soon became one of the best fishermen in the area and built over 100 boats in his lifetime. He also became the village coffin maker and undertaker, charging nothing for his services. The first school was held in the Marler living room, along with the first church service.
In 1899, he started the first post office in the parlor of his home and, of course, became the postmaster. He continued on as the Postmaster until retirement in 1945. It was Marler who coined the town’s name, Destin, in honor of his former employer and he also passed down the responsibility of Postmaster to his heirs.
The roaring 20’s served as a turning point for the tiny fishing village. Boat captains took the initiative in creating a brand new profit-making industry. These seasoned fishermen, who had heretofore made their living fishing commercially, turned to the new business of offering guided fishing trips to wealthy “tourists” looking for big game fish. Charter fishing was a hit from the beginning and Destin soon gained the reputation of being the Billfishing capital of the gulf. Today, Destin still boasts the largest charter boat fleet in Florida.
In 1947 Destin opened its first community center. In order to raise funds for the center, the first Destin Gulf Coast Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo was held in 1949. The Fishing Rodeo has continued as an annual tradition in Destin, attracting over 30,000 anglers each October to compete for over $100,000 in prizes. Destin continued to grow as a world-class resort centered around Sport Fishing, and in 1984, the City of Destin was finally incorporated.
The white beaches and emerald waters of the Destin area draw many tourists. Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection estimates that more than 80 percent of the Emerald Coast’s 4.5 million yearly visitors travel to the region to visit Destin. Visitors can charter fishing vessels from the harbor and there are 12 beach access points in the city. The sand on Destin’s beaches is some of the whitest in the world. It comes from the Appalachian Mountains, and is made of finely ground quartz crystal giving the appearance of sugar. Visitors play a large part in Destin’s economy - the city’s population of around 12,000 balloons to 40,000 during the tourist season.
For as long as most local residents can remember, this entire 30 mile stretch of beach has been referred to as “Destin.” Lately, however, each little hamlet has sought a separate identity. These days, the area between Destin and Panama City is known as the “Beaches of South Walton.” This is the story of a little fishing village that became a major tourist destination.

Could Bushcraft Survival Skills Save Your Life?
July 16, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Bushcraft survival, or the creative use of things in nature for survival, is more than just a hobby. Many see it as entertaining, particularly as we think of media survivalists like Ray Mears or Les Hiddins. But why would it be so useful for the average person to know how to build natural shelters, carve with bushcraft knives, make natural cordage and start a fire with sticks? Wasn’t that just something early American mountain men or the ancient Indians needed to know but not those of us living in modern society?
So, is there really a practical use for bushcraft survival today? In fact, people who love the outdoors like hikers and fishermen often express interest in the art. This makes sense as various situations could result from the pursuit of these hobbies which would render the enthusiast in trouble if he or she didn’t know how to survive with minimal gear.
But what about the rest of us? Unfortunately, everyone now faces the very real possibility of disaster scenarios in this new terrorism age when the actions of a few people can put hundreds of thousands or even millions in peril if they don’t know how to survive. A mastery of these skills can actually mean the difference between life and death for you and your family.
So how do you learn these skills? Fortunately, there is plenty of information available via the internet, on videos and books. The problem is that many think they’ve got it because they’ve read about it. When it comes to bushcraft survival, there’s no substitute for knowing by experience how to practice the art. You can do it, it just requires practice.
Bushcraft survival offers a great sense of satisfaction to children as they learn to be creative in problem solving using natural things which are available. It’s also a terrific family activity in that it’s fun and productive and gets everybody out in nature all at the same time. In the future, we’ll take a closer look at specific skills like natural fire starting and water procurement. Hope you can join us!

The Cutting Properties of a Bowie Knife
April 10, 2010 | Leave a Comment
A Bowie knife is one of the most versatile of outdoor knives. There are limitations, however, to even the most flexible of cutting tools. The size, heft and thickness of the blade all play a role in this. The materials of which the blade is made play a significant role, as well. There are advantages to a Bowie which make them more flexible than other knives, however, and which work to the user’s advantages.
Smaller Bowie knives are the most practical for actual precision cutting tasks. Not only are these knives much more agile and precise, they’re usually made of better materials and are much easier to sharpen. Bowies of between 6 and 10 inches are excellent for most outdoor sports. They even make fine cooking knives, though they are a bit thick of blade for very precise, gourmet cooking. The clipped point adds an even more agile section to the blade which is great for dealing with fish and game.
A larger Bowie knife is usually made of less-expensive materials. Oftentimes, the advantage of these materials is that they are harder and able to withstand more abuse without breaking than high-carbon steel and high-carbon stainless steel, the preferred materials for expensive Bowies. Remember that these knives are not suitable for cleaning game, especially small game, and that they’ll hack a fish to pieces rather than fillet it. As flexible as a Bowie is, size presents some limitations.
Remember that using a knife outside of its strengths is an invitation to disaster. Bowie knives which are small should not be used for hacking, chopping or for dealing with bone when cleaning an animal. The blade will invariably be damaged and, given the extreme use, it may slip or break. Such accidents can cause very serious injury, especially if one has a very sharp, very high-end knife in their hands.
Remember that safe cutting requires a sharp and clean edge. A Bowie knife should always be maintained to a sharp edge and protected against corrosion. No matter what type of blade one has or how expensive, it will become little more than a shiny stick without proper maintenance. Always keep Bowies in their sheaths when not in use, to protect both the knife and those around it!

What Are Inland Beach Cottage Rentals?
April 5, 2010 | Leave a Comment
When many people, singles and families alike, think about booking a holiday, many of them would only think about going to the beach for a fortnight’s lounging on the beach under the sun and swimming in warm, blue waters.
However, many of the best, most famous beach locations are magnets for crowds of people. It seems that most people like the sand, the sea and the sun. Now some people go to these destinations precisely because they are busy. They like the crowds and the night clubs that appeal to them. Mainly singles go to these kinds of destinations and a holiday affair is not far from many peoples’ minds.
Couples and older people may desire a little less noise, pollution and commotion. However, there are beaches which meet these requirements too. Often they are private beaches. Some have hotels on them but some do not. Those that do not frequently have inland beach cottage rental properties instead. These are nearly always self-catering.
When most people think of a beach it is instinctively connected with the sea. However, this need not inevitably be so. There are also inland beaches on lakes and rivers. These beaches are usually referred to as inland beaches. Accommodation can be a problem with even some of the best inland beaches.
Many of these inland beaches are just not well-known enough to make a hotel commercially feasible, but some of them have cottage rentals instead. These cottages, or cabins sometimes, can be difficult to find if you do not book early enough. They are frequently complete homes, fully equipped with all the household amenities you have grown accustomed to: a fully furnished living room, multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and a modern kitchen.
Inland beach cottage rentals are popular because they are usually located exactly on the water’s edge. This makes the patch of beach right before your cottage your private beach. You can sleep on it at night if it’s hot, lie there all day or set up a few fishing lines.
In the evenings, you can hitch up with neighbours to have a party or keep yourself to yourself. For this reason, it is a good thought to check photos of the cottage before you make a reservation.
If an inland beach cottage rental sounds just up your street, there are thousands to pick from in the United States and Canada. The Great Lakes are a particularly fine place to go. There are fantastic spots in the Finger Lakes region of New York state and along Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
You will not be disappointed about going on holiday to an inland beach cottage rental property. There are so many variations that there is certainly something for every pocket and every family size. Singles are not so well catered for, but if you want a quiet holiday alone. maybe to study, then this might right be for you too.
You can fly into some of these resorts by seaplane, but it is more likely that you will take your own car or a rental car, if you want to get out and do some exploring further afield. Personally, I would rather hire a boat.

Fixing the Blade on a Bowie Knife
March 30, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Bowie knives, like any cutting implement, are subject to certain types of damage. Among the worst types of damage a blade can endure is bending. Bent blades can be very hard to repair and, sometimes, the repair attempt can be dangerous. Metal can only bend back and forth so many times before it snaps. Using heat to make metal more malleable causes additional issues that may make the blade worse in the end. Sometimes, a professional is required.
The Bowie knife design was conceived with the intention that one would be availed of an excellent fighting knife and a durable, all-around survival knife. Many Bowies today, however, are made out of very expensive materials and some of those materials are specialized. The less expensive grades of stainless steel, such as 420, may be able to be bent out of and back into shape, but the more expensive types may well break before regaining their original shape.
Bending a knife back into shape is possible, but dangerous. When metals weren’t of a high quality, such as before the invention of good steel, swords and knives could be bent back into shape over and over again. Even cheap Bowie knives are made out of better materials than the best Iron Age swords. Unfortunately, this means that the blade is at risk of snapping as modern metals are very hard and not flexible. If one attempts to simply muscle the Bowie back into proper shape, they may get quite an injury from the snapping blade.
If one visits a blacksmith or a cutler’s shop, they’ll find a plethora of specialized equipment. For those who own very expensive Bowie knives, the repair will not be possible without such equipment. On a high-carbon blade, bending it back into shape will create a weak spot and heating it will most certainly ruin the temper. Bending it may snap the blade off altogether. A professional can maintain the temper, straighten the blade and fix the knife, in most cases, because of their specialized skills and knowledge.
Remember that Bowie knives may be durable and reliable, but this doesn’t mean that they can take infinite abuse. They have to be maintained and they have to be used sensibly. The heavy blade may be able to hack through a small tree or piece of firewood, but this will ruin the knife. Bending a bent blade back oneself may ruin it, too.

Caring for Bowie Knives
February 28, 2010 | Leave a Comment
A Bowie knife needs to be kept sharp and dry, free of corrosives and in a stable storage environment. If all of these conditions are met, these knives can last for many years. A very high-quality knife can easily last generations. Caring for these blades is generally quite simple, given the quality of steel available today.
Stainless steel, as the name says, is resistant to the types of corrosion that frequently ruin other knife blades. Even though this is the case, even stainless steel needs to be kept dry. Any fluid with which the knife comes into contact may damage the blade. Acidic liquids may pit and scar the blade, water may cause rust, and so forth. Always wipe down the blade before sheathing it.
Depending on the design of the Bowie knife, there may be other delicate parts that need maintenance, other than the blade. The handle, for instance, may be made out of a sensitive material such as wood or bone. Traditionally, a Bowie has a hand guard and that must also be kept clean and dry, particularly if it is made of metal. The type of knife one has will dictate much of the maintenance procedure. Some knives are built to be almost maintenance-free and others require a good deal of attention, even if they’re given little use.
The military Bowie knife designs are usually among the easiest to maintain. The finishes are dark, the hand guards simple and the design minimalistic in the extreme. Collector’s style Bowies oftentimes have ornate hand guards, lustrous blades and decorative handles. These require very specific types of cleaning, depending upon the materials used. The most utilitarian Bowies require only basic cleaning and a good sharpening now and again to keep them going.
Sharpening Bowie knives requires the right equipment and knowledge. These blades can be difficult to sharpen, even for a very experienced hand. To make the procedure easier, there are many products on the market that allow users to employ guides to maintain the correct angles that make a blade sharp. There are also products that make it easier to accommodate very large knives, such as Bowies. These sharpening techniques take time to learn, but the skill is one which never loses value.

Restrictions on Carrying a Bowie Knife
January 7, 2010 | Leave a Comment
One of the great joys of having a Bowie knife is showing it off. Bowie knives are elegant weapons, versatile tools and represent one of the legendary items associated with the American Frontier. In fact, it is not exaggerating to say that the Bowie knife is as much an American legend as is the claymore a Scottish one.
Carrying a Bowie knife in public is legal in certain states. This would mean, of course, that it’s perfectly fine to walk around any city in Arizona with a Bowie strapped to one’s leg, one might assume. One would be wrong. City laws may trump state laws, in this case, and one may still be committing a crime by carrying a Bowie in certain areas in Arizona.
Federal property is always off-limits. Never carry Bowie knives into post offices, court houses or onto any other official property. Schools and hospitals are always off-limits, as well. Even though American society allows individuals to bear arms, it is easy to see why society has declared such areas to be weapon-free zones. On private property, make sure that the owner has no prohibitions on weapons before entering. This is polite and good practice for following the law.
A Bowie knife may also be prohibited by any private property owner. In a bar, it is generally illegal to have any sort of weapon. The bar and the state will generally prohibit carrying weapons. Always observe these rules, even if able to legally carry the Bowie in a concealed fashion. That final aspect of carrying a weapon addresses a whole other feature of weapons laws.
In some places, the legality of carrying a Bowie knife will depend upon it being visible. While open carry of any weapon may be permitted, concealed carry will be illegal. Oftentimes, this is found in small towns where outdoors activities such as hunting are very common. Individuals in these places oftentimes go about their business with knives on their belts, especially around hunting and fishing season. The best advice is always to ask local law enforcement. Keep in mind that carrying a Bowie knife will almost always garner attention and, in some settings, may just be poor manners. In the right settings, however, it’s likely to draw a lot of questions and a lot of curiosity about the knife.

Cuba Has Now Become Highly Interested In Religion
January 4, 2010 | Leave a Comment
For the second year running a Christmas message has been read on National television by the Roman Catholic of Cuba, it seems that once an atheist communist government has now become highly interested in Religion. During the broadcast, Cardinal Jaime Ortega expressed his thanks as the Island’s families were able to reunite with their families living in the United States. This came upon as President Barack Obama removed restrictions that forbid any relationship between the Americans and Cubans.
The complete message was aired on Cuba’s government controlled television. A spokesperson for Havana’s Conference of Bishops, Orlando Marquez confirmed that the authorities had planned to show a Christmas concert that took place at the National Cathedral.
A retired mother Elisa Ramos was over the moon, she had not seen her son in 12 years and this would be the first time - she had mentioned that this was the best thing that happened to them.
It has been identified that after Ortega’s message, there has been some improvement between the government and the church.
In November 2008, President Raul Castro astonishingly joined thousands of faith believers for the beatification of Friar Jose Olallo Valdes in the city of Camaguey.
Raul took over his brothers place Fidel Castro as president earlier in the year of 2008. His first diplomatic meeting was with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Pope Benedict XVI’s secretary of state. Bertone was commemorating the 10th Anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s visit in Cuba.
In 1959, the government closed down religious institutions and expelled priests, this affect took place after Fidel Castro took over power in Cuba. After years of leading an atheist country, transformations happened in the early 1990’s. All reference of atheism was erased from the government’s constitution and people of all faiths were allowed to join the Communist Party. The situation improved when a visit from Pope John Paul II was made to Cuba.

The Marine Biodiversity Of Cuba
January 2, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Cuba - Peninsula of Guanahacabibes - has been chosen as a base for a research project conducted by Cuban and Spanish Scientists from the Cuban Oceanology Institute and the Spanish University of Oviedo. The Research project intends to widen the documentation of marine life in Cuba. Other areas to be explored are the Cienaga de Zapata near Bay of Pigs and Jardines de La Reina also celebrated for their rich bio diversity.
In an interview conducted by Prensa Latina the Spanish Biology Professor Jesus Ortega from Oviedo University expressed that more than 700 species are yet to be classified in the area known as Guanahacabibes. So far 50 varieties of mollusks have been officially classified and documented as new species.
Among the most eye-catching with very tiny almost transparent shells are the Emiliotia Inmaculatus and the Cubalaskeya Machoi both Mollusks collected at 33 meters deep in the sediments of Pedro Cavern.
Not surprisingly a strong similarity has been found between mollusks found in the Bahamas and South Florida Keys and the species found in the Guanahacabibes Peninsula in the western part of Cuba.
Peninsula de Guanahacabibes, rich in Flora and Fauna, has been declared Protected Area of The Biosphere in the late 1980 and the least human interaction can be found in this region which has been accountable for the documentation of 50 percent of all mollusk species found in Cuba.
This is a part of Cuba with a shocking wonderful natural wealth, with an enormous species variety still to determine said Cuban ecologist Jose Espinosa, and continued - Cuba might be a centre for plankton larvae that could favour the most needed healing the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean sea.
In the whole of Penisula de Guanahacabibes there is just one tourist resort called Maria la Gorda famous among snorkellers and divers but with restrictions in the way humans interact with the environment.
