Horror Films From The Last Ten Years Which Are Worth Seeing
July 31, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Horror movies have become a bustling business in Hollywood. With relatively low cost of production and a generally solid return at the box office, horror films are churned out every year in a big way. One thing is certain. People like to be scared at the movies.
If you are looking to get into horror movies it is tough to sift through all the bad ones. Here are some scary movies that are worth seeing.
Vampires have been in the media in a big way for the past few years. Unfortunately most movies they have been in are more about love and less about horror. Even though it was not a perfect film, I thoroughly enjoyed 30 days of night for this exact reason.
Another great horror film that was the surprise hit of 2009 was paranormal activity. Recorded in the first person point of view, using only a camcorder, this film supposedly had a $15,000 budget and grossed over $100 million. Not too bad huh? The sequel comes out later this year.
While it achieved very little acclaim at the box office, I thoroughly enjoyed Zombieland. Starring Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg, Zombieland came out in 2009 and was both scary and hilarious. Now this is a great movie for someone who does not like horror movies to watch. Woody keeps it funny while the zombies provide enough gore to satisfy horror fans.
Of course, an instant classic horror movie was The Blair Witch Project. I remember seeing this film in theatres a few days before going on a camping trip, which was a big, big mistake. This movie was revolutionary for its first-person camera angle, and the whole thing was shot on a video camera.
A more recent horror film that was excellent is “Let The Right One In” which chronicles a vampire girl who befriends a normal boy. The boy is often bullied, but all that changes when he meets his vampire neighbor Eli, who takes care of business.
Finally, Sunshine, by Academy Award winning director Danny Boyle is another fantastic film. While it may not be a true horror film per se, its plot is scary and realistic and at the very least, it can be called suspenseful.

Fantastic Action Films That Were Box Office Successes In The Last Decade
July 29, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Over the past few years, action movies have taken huge steps forward. The budgets are as big as they have ever been, and visual effects have become so impressive that action movies often make us wonder if what we are watching actually happened.
In my opinion, here are the best action movies from the past ten years.
When it comes to superhero movies, big action sequences are a given. However, the best superhero action movie award goes to The Dark Knight. The scene where Batman wraps a cable around the wheels a truck speeding toward him is an unforgettable sequence.
The other great superhero film from the past few years was Iron Man. This movie was more lighthearted than The Dark Knight, but was incredibly entertaining. The action scenes were unlike anything we have ever seen. When Iron Man is being chased by M16s, it is like a roller coaster ride.
No list of action films in recent memory would be complete without mentioning Avatar. This film was truly James Cameron’s action masterpiece. And this is coming from the guy that brought us the Terminator films as well as True Lies, one of the best action movies ever.
V for Vendetta was another action film that I thoroughly enjoyed. It had the right balance of seriousness and humor and used a lot of the technology made famous by the Wachowski Brothers in the Matrix films to wow audiences. The final fight scene, in particular, is breathtaking.
Give Michael Bay credit where its due. The guy may not make quality movies, but he knows action. The latest Transformers movie did not disappoint with action scenes and left my jaw open several times.
As it stands, this is my list. I may have to save room for the Expendables, as it has the biggest action cast ever assembled and has been in the works for years.

The Greatest Films For Uncontrollable Laughter From The Past Decade
July 29, 2010 | Leave a Comment
When it comes to comedies, different people have different tastes. Some people like dry humor, others dark humor, and most people enjoy laugh out loud comedies. Regardless of the type of comedy you like, one thing is for sure: people like to see movies that make them laugh.
The following are some films that have incorporated all these things over the past decade, and subsequently were some of the funniest movies to be released.
The Hangover was a smash hit by all accounts. It shattered box office expectations, grossing over $250 million in the United States alone. It had a reported $35 million dollar budget, so it is safe to say that the studios were incredibly pleased with this one. There is no doubt that after the Hangover’s success, The Hangover 2 is on its way.
Another comedy that had much success at the box office was the raunchy hit Superbad. Starring Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, this coming of age film was nothing short of laugh out loud hilarious. Christopher Mintz Plasse, as the role of McLovin’, stole the show in this film and as a result, landed the youngster more work.
Even though it seems like forever ago, Old School hit theatres in 2003 and won college students over quickly. This film was considered by many a modern Animal House and was quite possibly the best Will Ferrell movie we have ever seen. Works of an Old School 2 have been rumored for a long time now, but supposedly it is happening.
Another awesome film was Role Models. Sean William Scott has been relatively quiet since his role as Stiffler (even though he has definitely gotten work), but this film was a breath of fresh air. Paul Rudd is always hilarious and this duo was great to watch as mentors for troubled youngsters.
One other film that I have to mention is Wedding Crashers. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson make one of the best comedic duos we have seen in a long time with this film and their back and forth banter is nothing short of hilarious.
So these are just some of the many hilarious films to be released in recent memory. More to come.

The 90s Most Celebrated Action Movies
July 25, 2010 | Leave a Comment
When I think of action movies, I think of the 1990s. Films starring action icons like Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Nicholas Cage set the tone for the action films today. This was before the John Cena’s and Jason Stathams. This was a time when action movies were at their finest.
The following are what I consider to be the best action movies from 1990 to 1999.
The first film I have to mention is the 2nd Terminator film, T2: Judgement Day. Arnold is at his best in T2 and the T1000 was one of the scariest villains I remember from my childhood.
True Lies, also directed by James Cameron was another epic action movie. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a secret agent and Jamie Lee Curtis as the oblivious wife, this movie personifies 1990s action. Explosions, helicopters, airplanes oh my.
Ironically, a film that spoofed all the action movies of the 90s ended up being one of my favorites. Of course, I am talking about Hot Shots: Part Deux. I have incredibly fond memories of this film and any time it is on (which is very rare), I feel the need to watch it.
When it comes to watching a 90s action flick with my buddies from high school, there is no movie we would rather watch than The Rock. Everything about this movie is awesome. I am not always a fan of Michael Bay’s work but he delivered with this one.
The most critically acclaimed action film on this list is The Professional. Starring Natalie Portman in her breakout role, as well as the great Jean Reno, the Professional tells a story about a hitman (Reno) who takes a young girl (Portman) under her wing in a great revenge story.
These are at the top of the list, but there are so many others from this decade that are worthy of praise in another article.

Learn Film Producing The Pricey Manner
July 24, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Ignore the stories in the journals and articles about the skyscraping monetary resources of the smash hit motion pictures. Is that really credible? Even the smallest film can have unusual expenses related to its production, expenditures that may start out long before the initial still picture is framed. For a lot of filmmakers, just before they will shout “action” the very first time, there is motion picture education with motion picture courses, filmmaking suggestions along with other methods to allow them to study filmmaking. Yet, what’s the true cost of film production, to the student, to the mom and dad of a young college student or the family members of an older college student?
Motion picture college, normally the first task to creating an initial motion picture of any length, is actually pricey, not just to the film courses themselves but for the frequently heart breaking, psychological toll it can have. But there are more, less internal fees that are included in film making, including the price of site, equipment, celebrities and also the other accoutrement that’s needed for the take. There are other even less interesting costs like expenses for licences and accreditation to bear in mind also.
For a small film university, the fee can be fairly high, and generally needs a complete college schooling, with all the complete field of necessary programs that many individuals do not concur has something to do with their own eventual career of choice. For other students, there could be alternatives such as movie lessons that are separate from other college education, however that’s not often feasible in all areas and for all individuals. And while this will certainly cost you much less compared to a full schooling, it is still costly. When a student only gets a couple of movie classes rather than pursuing an entire school education though, they cannot make the most of several free college funding, subsidies as well as other educational assistance by any means.
Film training alone can be costly, but it is likewise expensive to create a motion picture as well. The extra ambitious the movie will probably be, the more high-priced it’ll be. A very short movie may cost significant amounts of time, funds and effort for the individual. Even if other folks volunteer their own time and energy to help you in the project, you will find costs which cannot be eliminated.
Regardless of how much of a talent the potential film maker might seem to his relatives and buddies, they will gain from a number of formal movie classes which can include not only the basics, but may also include other topics such as location legal aspects as well as other mundane information that the filmmaker probably won’t think about instantly. Although it is high priced to take movie training in even a small, local movie university, there are other options like an affordable alternative.

A 25 Year Old’s List For Movies Worth Going To The Movies For This Summer Season
July 14, 2010 | Leave a Comment
As far as movies go, 2010 has been off to a slow start. It is officially summer movie season but you wouldn’t know it since the box office has been so lackluster the past few weeks. New entries like Prince of Persia and Ashton Kutcher’s killers, just don’t have the same allure as movies of comparable weekends in years past (Spiderman, Pirates, etc).
That is not to say there are not good movies coming out this year. The summer and Christmas seasons have some good ones to look forward to.
I am a big science fiction guy. Because of this, the new movie Splice, about a team of scientists who play God by creating a new species by combining human and animal DNA, is right up my alley. It stars Adrien Brody and was released this week.
It has been over 10 years since Toy Story 2 came out, and audiences are eager to see what will happen when Andy goes to college in Toy Story 3. I am very excited for this one for two reasons. First off, Pixar has yet to make a bad movie. Second, Toy Story spans generations and it seems like everyone wants to see it. Expect a big box office weekend when Toy Story 3 comes out.
My most anticipated movie of 2010 is Inception. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page and Joseph Gordon Levitt and is a psychological thriller about stealing information from peoples dreams. The trailers have been vague in typical Christopher Nolan fashion but Inception is sure to be amazing.
While the trailers for Inception have been very much ambiguous until recently I do not think it will matter in the long run. I would trust Christopher Nolan with any script. It seems the more movies he does, the better he gets as well.
In a last attempt to save his career, M. Night Shymalan will be releasing The Last Airbender based on a childrens show of the same name on Nickelodeon. I have to admit, the visual effects in the trailers have looked pretty impressive and I won’t be ashamed to be lined up with the Nickelodeon generation to see this one.
Finally, Tron 3D should be a visual masterpiece. The original was revolutionary at the time, and the trailers for the new one look like it setting the bar again. The special effects look insane.

The Films You Should See From Last Year
July 4, 2010 | Leave a Comment
2009 was an incredible year for movies. It was the first year that the Academy expanded the list of best picture nominees to 10 and it was only fitting. Every film on that list deserved to be there.
Here are some of my favorite films that were released in 2009.
Simply put, I couldn’t breathe during the Hurt Locker. It was that suspenseful. The cinematography and directing in this Iraq War commentary piece is outstanding. Kathryn Bigelow did an unbelievable job and deserved to win the 2009 Academy award for Best Picture of the Year. I think the award for Best Director should have gone to someone else though…
If you haven’t seen Avatar, you must be living under a rock. What an experience this movie is. James Cameron continues to push the boundaries of movies and showed u something we had never seen before with the world of Pandora.
The planet of Pandora was unlike anything we, as viewers, have ever seen and the 3d technology truly made you feel as if you were on this foreign planet.
Both the aforementioned movies were exceptional, but my favorite movie of the year goes to District 9.
I love everything about this movie. I love how this movie was directed by a relatively inexperienced director (Neil Blompkamp) with a first time actor in Sharlto Copley. This movie had a fraction of the budget of so many bad action flicks that come out of Hollywood, and it blows most of them away.
This was a movie I never wanted to end; It provides a realistic look into what an alien invasion could look like. District 9 was action packed, suspenseful, funny at times and heartbreaking at others. I never knew where this movie was going next and I cannot wait to see it again.

The Greatest Christian Bale Films Of The Past Ten Years
July 1, 2010 | Leave a Comment
When it comes to versatile male actors in Hollywood these days, there are only a few. Daniel Day Lewis is the king; Leonardo Di Caprio is great, as is Johnny Depp. But another fantastic actor that was overlooked until recently is Christian Bale.
Here are some of my favorite Christian Bale movies.
While Batman Begins was great, The Dark Knight was even better. With an all star cast and a legendary performance by Heath Ledger, Christian Bale’s performance was overshadowed. Ledger created one of the best villains in Hollywood history, but Bale did a pretty great job with Bruce Wayne as well.
Another incredible movie by the duo of Bale and director Christopher Nolan was The Prestige. Also starring Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johannson, Bale does an incredible job of playing a talented magician who has some dark secrets up his sleeve that are revealed at the end of the movie.
Two words. The Machinist. Bale weighed less than 130 pounds for this low budget psychological thriller, and that was right after he weighed 210 pounds for Batman Begins.
American Psycho - An instant cult classic, in American Psycho, Christian Bale plays Patrick Bateman better than anyone else I can image. The movie is a satire of the 1980s and Bale is both hysterical and terrifying at the same time. I have probably seen this one fifteen times.
Rescue Dawn - In another performance where Bale had to lose a ton of weight for the role, Rescue Dawn tells the true story of Dieter Dengler, a US pilot who was shot down and imprisoned in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam war.
Equilibrium - This movie is sort of bad, but amazing. In a futuristic world where humans take pills to suppress any sort of emotion, Christian Bale does a great job at showing his struggle to feel, while taking down bad guys at the same time.

Tips To Search For Good Material For Your Story
June 28, 2010 | Leave a Comment
There are a lot of writers that are just starting out who have a hard time deciding what to write about. This is totally understandable as a lot of them have such talent to write great things and all they want is to make a good story.
The first thing to do in order to get the right topic that you want is to write frequently. Writing a little every day and writing about things that cross your mind at the time, your mind will develop the creative flexibility needed to write a good novel.
These daily exercises will encourage your mind to think in ways that are crucial for writing novels. After a while, you will begin to think about topics and ideas for long term projects.
In reality, you are just increasing your odds through experimenting with different ideas until one works for you.
Instead of thinking of an entire storyline, consider just thinking about certain situations. Think about life’s little complications and problems that most people identify with.
After this, start pulling apart these situations and start to ask questions. While you are expanding on these things, enough material can emerge to fill the whole novel, one moment at a time. Consider how the circumstances develop and what the character did to get involved.
Ask how their problem can be managed or fixed. In addition, think how other people are interacting in the story. By doing this, you can shape the plot and develop your characters at the same time, and this puts you one step nearer to writing your novel.
If perhaps you are having difficulty coming up with enough material on your own, think about getting a writing partner to work with. Sharing the project with others may help increase ideas, material and more options for the overall text.
This teaming up of creative minds can be very synergistic and you may be surprised that the to of you together are more effective than alone. Try not to be too stiff and formal, and think of these times as fun jam sessions where creative ideas can flow freely.
