An Idea Of An Impressive Resume

September 2, 2010 | Leave a Comment

The resumes of many college students have a bunch of unnecessary details in them. Most graduates make the mistake of putting everything they can possibly think of on their resume. Employers want to see specific things, and there are several factors that can greatly assist you in getting the first job.

Make sure you have a specific and detailed objective in your resume. Employers look at the objective to get an idea of what you’re looking for job-wise; it can make all the difference between obtaining that first interview and having an employer throw your resume in the trash.

Objectives should be directly related to the job you are applying for. Any knowledge and skills you possess, as well as potential contributions that make you an ideal candidate for the position should be included.

Since you just graduated, it is unlikely that you’ve had a job before in the field you’re trying to break into. This is one of the most notable difference is between you and the experienced workers who begin their resumes with their rich work histories.

So it is better for you to bring your academic history to the forefront. List your academic honors and achievements, volunteer work, extracurricular activities, etc. Putting this at the beginning of your resume highlights you as a good student that is worth taking a chance on.

It is best to keep your resume short and sweet. Employers do not want to spend forever reading page after page of a single resume. Having a long resume with a bunch of extraneous details doesn’t make you any more impressive than the person with a short resume that contains exactly what the employer wants to see; on the contrary, it makes you less likely to get the position.

Always proofread your resume before submitting it. Nothing is worse than having an employer get the wrong idea about you because your resume is full of spelling errors and typos.

You don’t want to get your resume from the late because a word was misspelled or your grammar was incorrect. Making sure your resume is without error shows potential employers that you take yourself seriously and have an eye for detail.

The Difficulty Of Learning Another Language Depends On The Motivation Of The Learner

September 1, 2010 | Leave a Comment

Being multilingual, or even bilingual, can seem like an impossible goal for some people. The very idea of learning another language automatically shut some people down; they simply can’t see themselves ever being able to speak another language. Some languages are pretty hard to learn for native English speakers, but with hard work and dedication, even you can become fluent in another tongue.

The origin of the language has a lot to do with how easy it is to learn. If you’re trying to learn a language from the same language group is your own, like a Spanish speaker learning English, the process will be much quicker than learning Korean or Swahili.

However, every language requires effort on your part to learn. Just like any other new activity, learning a language requires practice and patience.

If you don’t commit to the learning process, you will retain nothing. Think back to the days in high school, when you were forced to take a language but weren’t really that interested in it. You slacked, maybe slid by with a passing grade, but you didn’t really learn anything. And that is because you did not want to.

How steep learning curve is depends on how focused you are willing to be. Anything you commit yourself to, you can accomplish.

Think about it this way. If someone was going to pay you a king’s ransom to learn a language in six months, would you be able to do it? The answer is yes, because you would be so focused on achieving your goal, practically nothing else would matter.

Maintaining your motivation is crucial to your learning process. Getting sidetracked or discouraged will only distract you from your goal.

So buckle down and try to learn a language. Being bilingual can make it easier to get a job, raise your self-esteem, and generally make you a more interesting person. Give it a shot and you won’t be disappointed.

Tips For Journalists Who Suffer From Writer’s Block

September 1, 2010 | Leave a Comment

Writer’s block is a plight akin to a plague of locusts for a writer on a deadline, or one who just simply can’t manage to get down to work.

It’s just like squeezing blood from a rock, sometimes when you can’t come up with anything worth writing about. But, those with experience can say there are some outs that you ca use to get through the blockage.

For starters, you might benefit from a little break from the computer or typewriter. You might just need a little time to let your mind wander and get flexible again. Sometimes doing something is just what you ought not to be doing.

You might even need to use a little bit of sleep, like a nap, to get back to where you want to be mentally speaking. But the sleep is not all. A break is like taking a rest from physical labor. It gives your muscles time to rest and so does your brain. It’s so because of the way that things work so this way is to be true.

Sometimes you just need to get the junk out of your system. Sometimes a block is a block. Try just writing whatever comes into your head and not worrying about the quality. You can get back to the subject later when you have cleared yourself out.

See, writers are also artists and freedom is a dominant theme of the artist’s life. You can’t always force the good stuff to come out whenever you want it to. Go raw and get it out there. Work on things that aren’t what you should be writing.

A thing to think about it also your diet. You should avoid eating the junk that is so prevalent for the type of people that you are one of. If you are eating a lot of takeout and fast food, the odds are good that you aren’t getting what you need in your body and any given time.

Your brain is a part of your body and it needs good stuff to keep operating at top capacity. You should get some good food and possibly even some vitamins to make it all work properly the way it’s supposed to.

Every language poses different degrees of difficulty to the learners. So one must decide which language one wishes to learn, for your decision can be the answer to your question.

It is easier for one to learn the language from a tutor who is native and is not alien to the country of that language. It is much easier to learn German or Spanish from an English-speaking teacher than learning Japanese or Mandarin from him.

Depending upon the language you wish to learn, you will find it easier to learn from a tutor who is fluent in it and is native to the particular country. Learning Spanish and German for example is easier if the tutor is an English-speaking gentleman than learning Chinese or Japanese from him.

When in school, though we study the language, most of us do not learn the language. Learning any language requires one to be interested and invest his or her time and effort in learning. This is no so with students for we just manage to pick up few phrases and words of the language unconsciously and do not show interest.

Learner has to focus and put his efforts in learning the language. One can master it only when you practice in learning the skill like you learn to drive or swim etc.

What if some one was to offer you five hundred dollars to learn a foreign language like Spanish? You will be surprised, your commitment and determination will make you master the language in a short span of a few months.

Make learning a foreign language your priority. This will not only yield rich fruits in terms enhancing your skill sets and help you professionally, it gives you an added advantage of having successfully achieved something in life and can be a moral booster.

The Complex Process Of Speaking English

August 26, 2010 | Leave a Comment

English is not a very simple language as some people want to think because even after learning the basics in elementary school, most people still lack in the area of technical language skills.

You will see that people begin to struggle with words that sound similar even though their spellings are different. Take for example words like “their, they’re and there, its and it’s”; are some of those that cause a lot of problems to those who cannot spell them properly. This forces one to determine the word according to its context or else one must check the dictionary which is actually the best option. People who do very well with spellings are not genius or more intelligent, it only shows that the person has greater talent in this area.

It is the same case to the punctuation and grammar that was learned in the basic language lessons, but now how to practice it is the issue because not everyone will find it easy to do so. Here too the rules tend to vary because it all depends on the grammar book you consulted. Therefore if you are aware that this area poses a challenge for you, the best thing is to employ the services of a professional proofreader to check your writing prior to presenting it to an audience.

Even very good writers are liable to making errors and so it is a mistake to send any written item whether by email, or be it to print a newsletter, or even dare to publish any of these before going through it first to try and detect any errors. Do this by checking each sentence separately, away from the other paragraphs. It is only in this manner that your mind would not make you believe that you have read the actual point instead of just imagining what you saw.

Many people also do not know how to use apostrophes properly since they have no idea that apostrophes are meant to denote possession, as in: Susan’s car and the Smiths’ home.

Make sure you read your work loudly and you will definitely be able to see the mistakes because they will stand out more prominently; even though this style may slow you down.

Any grammatical and spelling errors require the checking in the dictionary but if that is still not helpful enough, then feel free to refer to your language teacher or even the librarian.

It pays to have a firm command of language because it will make you more confident with your communication skill as well as be respected by those who read and hear your language.

Improving Communication With An English Speaking Course Online

August 15, 2010 | Leave a Comment

The internet is completely changing the future of education. Traditional education has taken a hit, as many programs are diverting away from the classroom, traditional methods of delivery. They are instead moving towards online or semi-online modules. English continues to gain worldwide importance and has now superseded other languages as the recognized lingua franca. It is therefore no surprise that communicative competence in English is so important for travel, business and a wide range of professional and academic activities. There are four linguistic skills, reading, writing, listening and speaking. However, only speaking requires practice with a native or near native speaker to completely master and hone. The other skills, writing, listening and reading, can all be practiced and learnt without actual interaction with mother-tongue English speakers. One option to perfect speaking skills is to take an English speaking course online, for real practice with actual English native speakers.

How It Works

Online English speaking courses utilize technology connected to the world wide web. The world is a small global community and the internet offers communication possibilities like never before. Learning and practicing English with an English native speaker can now occur regardless of the learner or speaker’s physical location. Many native speakers offer private speaking conversation classes and tutorial sessions with Skype, using webcams for live interaction with non-native English learners. Many schools employ English speakers to instruct conversation classes utilizing advanced whiteboard software. These companies are usually private language schools, career colleges and sometimes even private instructors themselves.

The Benefits

Unfortunately oral fluency cannot be properly developed and honed without constant practice with a fluent speaker of English. For many students who do not have exposure to English speakers in their own countries, this is next to impossible. Possibly the only opportunities for practice these students may have is when they travel abroad, encounter foreign tourists, have classes with visiting professors, or speak to online language teachers.

Students will inevitably also learn correct pronunciation, variations in syllabification and and be exposed to variations of English, especially when exposed to native speakers of different continents and dialects. Online conversation classes teach students idiomatic expressions, cultural etiquette and expressions and phrases not taught in textbooks.

What an Online Course Includes

An English speaking course online can be very relaxed and informal or serious and academic. Courses will be centered around discussion of various themes and students will be expected to express opinions and share ideas. Regardless of the type of course, the instructor is expected to adhere to techniques which improve oral fluency; this usually means that student talk times is generally high and teacher talk time is rather low. Students are also expected to interact with each other, making courses fun and motivational. The role of the instructor is reduced to that of facilitator instead of teacher. Still, students should not assume that courses are unstructured; students are generally given a course outline which covers conversational themes and topics that will be developed during the course. Although not a grammar course, the instructor should also review significant grammar points and correct mistakes when required.

Where to Find It

A quick online search should yield a variety of online English courses offered by both institutions and individuals.

My Personal View Of Writing

August 9, 2010 | Leave a Comment

Lots of people hate writing articles. I fully disagree; article writing can be one of the most rewarding tasks that there can be. It is both fun and educational, while also being great mental exercise.

It isn’t easy to come up with a whole range of potential writing subjects and then turn those around into fully-formed articles. But there are ways to turn this chore into a routine task that is easy to get out of the way.

It does and will always take a little bit of blood, sweat and tears to go through the process of article writing, but with a few simple steps you can make the process easier. Keep these things in mind.

You could try listing out your major points ahead of time. Come up with the things you have to say and then follow it as you go through the writing process. Like driving, it helps to have a good idea of where you are going.

It doesn’t hurt to employ a little storytelling technique either. Don’t be afraid to insert a little bit of yourself into your articles. Share your own experiences with your readers when it is appropriate. Readers are far more engaged by the story or somebody else’s own experience than by a simple, factual outline.

It can help, too, if you try to challenge yourself in your writing. You can do this by setting simple, arbitrary goals, like timelines. These often help me to get through a story quickly and without much angst. It can be pretty easy to get distracted too. A timeline helps with that.

Another thing I like to do is give myself rewards at the end of the day. For example, if I get through several articles in a sitting, then I’ll allow myself a breather after to surf the internet. If I beat my own best time at writing, I’ll take myself out for ice cream. It’s little things, but it’s effective.

The last thing I do is a little unconventional, but it works. I use a software plugin to track my typing speed. Then I’ve worked for a while to up the numbers. It’s another minor thing, but it helps take out some of the filters in the process of writing.

Aside from writing as a hobby, this writer additionally regularly pens articles on Disney antenna topper and cordless phone system.
