Never Take A Speed Reading Program Before Reading This Article

August 3, 2010 | Leave a Comment

The best speed reading programs are more about training a person out of poor reading patterns and teaching them the good ones they may never have been given the opportunity to learn. Students are not the only group of individuals who must read and comprehend huge amounts of material, adults do the same simply to try and keep up with the rapid changes taking place these days. Almost every job and most leisure pursuits require reading for research and information, in fact the average person may have little time left for reading for pleasure.

Reading comprehension is every bit as important as speed since reading text quickly but retaining little of it does little good. Programs to help people increase reading speed also focus upon helping them increase their comprehension. The reader learns to pick out the important words and zero in on the information that matters no matter where it is on the page.

There is no real mystery to most speed programs they teach basic skills that are meant to replace current ones which slow reading speed down and may impair comprehension of what was read. Most people were never taught the basic good habits, and are instead using poor reading habits because it is all they have. While good habits are not instinctive, neither was reading simple when first learned, and yet most people do it without thought now.

Programs to increase reading speed may not make a person any more intelligent than they already are. They will however often make a person seem more intelligent, because they are able to read faster and have access to that much more information. There are programs that focus on helping children develop good habits early in their academic career. Children usually benefit in two ways from these, they read more because reading is easier and no longer have a chore, and they absorbed more material, which can help maximize their study time.

Courses at one time for learning speed reading were limited to formalized classes and took a chunk of time from the day or evening. With the improved technology today though, courses for all ages can be found in the form of software programs. There is still the option to attend formal and traditional speed classes and though that option is not best for everyone.

Software courses allow an individual to study whenever they have time free and that may be perfect for busy individuals. However a person who has difficulty finding time to use the PC at home or whose home is very noisy and distracting might prefer a formal class. Classes do have the advantage of a controlled and quiet environment geared toward learning.

Difficult material such as technical journals or textbooks may not be ideal to start practicing these reading habits on. Difficult material takes time and pauses to assimilate and might hinder the learning process. Reading materials such as a light novel or favorite humorist may make for better material to practice upon. Later as the individual becomes more skilled they can progress to the more difficult materials which take focus and concentration to understand.

Most speed reading programs also offer tips on how to improve reading comprehension. While reading faster is important, remembering the important points is also crucial to getting the most from these programs. Choose programs based on the home environment, the age of the reader and the possible distractions in their learning environment. Not all benefit from a home course, when it is hard or impossible to find a quiet place to practice at home.

Issues To Know About Speed Reading Exercises

Speed reading exercises aim to increase the rate of reading without affecting retention or comprehension of the text. There are many different methods for speed reading but the essential is that they all focus on a balance between speed and comprehension. Another thing; they all necessitate a certain amount of practice.

Speed readers go about their thing in a variety of ways like not vocalizing all words, making out words without recognizing every letter in each word and quickly skimming through the text. Each reader will have methods that come more in a more instinctual way and they’ll unveil themselves with practice and time. Overall, the goal is to get your eyes to move at a faster rate and recognize words quickly.

Skimming through the text is a method a reader uses to scan across a text for a general idea of the essence of the article. In the case of informational texts that are very dense, this is not necessarily the best method to use because comprehension tends to be less. Of course, this is a good method for a brief idea of the text and understanding its general meaning.

Another way to better reading speed is meta guiding and this method is very popular and widely taught. This method includes making the eyes follow a pointer in the form of a finger or pen along the following of text. This is a way to accelerate eye coordination and subduing subvocalization.

There is a basic speed reading exercise associated with this method that consists of pacing yourself with your finger and going through a text while accelerating the speed at which you’d normally read across a line. The reader should gradually accelerate the movement of the finger and force the eyes to distinguish words quickly and increase the speed at which one reads.

Another exercise to try to attempt to learn a speed reading technique consists of quickly scanning through the material to look for key words attached to the essential meaning of the sentences. In essence, this is reading in blocks and is also done in other exercises which can become more complicated.

This next exercise requires a little more preparation time and index cards. The index cards need to be prepared with blocks of words, phrases or sentence fragments. This exercise will consist of reading directly from the index cards instead of using a full text. For a few minutes, flip through the cards and try to quickly recognize the group of words that figure on every card. Effectively, this works word recognition mechanisms to accelerate the rate at which fragments of sentences are read.

Each and every one of these speed reading exercises requires some time to be invested in order to actually work. For optimal conditions, the reader should have plenty of rest and optimal level of concentration while practicing these exercises. It takes time and a lot of practice before a reader will really increase his speed. Reading really fast is possible while keeping a good level of retention and comprehension.

Speed reading is a great skill to have in the academic and professional worlds. It is rather easy to learn this skill and doesn’t require a financial investment. All that is necessary are speed reading exercises, a little patience and some determination.

Speed Reading

February 24, 2010 | Leave a Comment

What have you been reading lately? At a meeting, you can soon see who the broad-spectrum readers are, since wide readers are often quick thinkers and good public speakers too. They quickly win the adulation, respect, and fellowship of others. After all, reading expands the mind and many people see it as one of the most satisfying pleasures known to mankind, being a combination, as it is, of mental agility and physical relaxation well above the level offered by television or the cinema.

The act of reading is primarily a mental activity, since you read with your mind and use your imagination to paint the storyline of the action thriller you are reading. You use your mind to imagine the pain that the characters in the story are experiencing as the plot unfolds; or you contemplate the various arguments and ideas introduced by the author of that self-help book you are studying.

Being able to read effectively helps you to develop an extensive vocabulary through reading different styles of books. A skillful reader recognizes a wide range of vocabulary. The reader may not know exactly what every word means, but he/she will have a good idea of what the sentence means.

The act of reading makes you more aware and more interested in new words. Some readers even develop ‘the dictionary habit’, which means that every time they come across a new word, they attempt to work out what it possibly means from the context. If they are stumped, they refer to a dictionary.

In the same way, reading develops intellectual curiosity by exposing you to different subjects. You learn to read by reading books of increasing difficulty and variety. Just as in other forms of education, you are learning by actually doing and while you are reading you are automatically learning about the subject matter of the book too - like a free by-product!

Reading trains you to have an active and open mind. Just grasping the writers idea is not really good enough, you must have a reply to what you read. Be an active, not a passive, reader. Try to develop the habit of drawing your own conclusions, the habit of active thinking, of agreeing or disagreeing with the writer. Always keep your mind open; understand and weigh the ideas that you read. A practical part of active reading is the development of one’s own conclusions.

Now let me introduce you to the idea of speed reading. All of the above applies three, four, eight, nine, even ten times over, because speed readers can read that much faster than the average reader! Imagine that … being able to read, comprehend and remember all those books. You would certainly become well-read in your subject far more quickly than others. Just think how that could help you at work or in school or college …

Let me share four primary rules for effective reading and better comprehension:

1) Try to read more and more every month. Remember the saying that practice makes perfect. 2) Develop the habit of reading for main ideas, ie look for the subject and predicate - the main ideas 3) Learn to read with focus and concentration. Think of what you are reading. Good readers read with understanding. 4) Learn to budget your time. Experiment with your reading time. Try purposely to read faster. Give yourself a time limit on a specific article that you are reading.

Reading is a fantastically stimulating mental activity. It expands your reality and capability. You have so much to gain in discovering the joys of reading. So, go ahead and take down a book right now.

Speed Reading Impacts Your Life - More Free Time

February 23, 2010 | Leave a Comment

How would you like to remember 90% of what you read from anything a magazine, your favorite novel, business reports, your child’s MySpace blog? How would you like to be able to read faster? Perhaps even four or five times faster and you’ll still remember almost everything you read! How would you like this to happen in just one single hour?

Impossible? Not hardly! With Speedread America’s Speed Complete Speed Reading Method, hundreds of thousands of people have done just that!

But what can one do with the ability to read over 600 words per minute and remember almost every word? The lifelong effects of speed reading are numerous.

First, you will finally be able to get to all those books on your list “or your university professors’ “Suggested Reading” lists” you have never had the time to read before. Suddenly, an hour’s commute to work on public transportation won’t mean simply a chapter or two it will mean an entire book checked off your list! You won’t even get that sense of disappointment when you skim a book just to finish it. With the Complete Speed Reading Program, and the new ability to retain nearly everything you read, you’ll be able to discuss the book in next month’s “or even next year’s” book club! When you read Les Miserables or Moby Dick for your literature class, you will be able to read the unabridged versions in less time than it takes your classmates to read the bastardized cut-out-entire-chapters versions! Not only that, you will have the bragging rights that come with reading the classics as the author intended.

If you are in a profession that requires a lot of reading and just as much retention such as scholars, physicians, writers, doctors, and attorneys “or are interested in going into such fields” being able to read even twice as fast can end up saving a lot of time “even up to days or weeks” on an intense project.

If you are a student “or just know” being able to read faster and comprehend more will, definitely, be of a great boon to not only your ease of study, but also your GPA. Studies have also shown that the new way of reading taught to those who want to speed read may also assist the brain in learning a new language.

Speed reading also has lifelong physical effects as well. The less time you spend reading, the less eye strain and eye and muscle fatigue you will experience which may cut down on the need for reading glasses later in life.

Because the Complete Speed Reading Method re-teaches your brain how to read, you learn how to remember more at the same time. Simply being able to remember what you have read can be just what you need to set yourself apart from the pack paying for that next promotion, the university scholarship, the head of the bell curve, or the rest of the neighborhood book club.

Dynamics of Speed Reading

January 31, 2010 | Leave a Comment

ACCELERATION THROUGH PACING:

Hand movements can cause improvement of reading speed. Now I’ll introduce to you the well-known pacing movement. It uses your index finger of your dominant hand, i.e. right handed use right hand, to scan a line by running your finger under the type you are reading. Always turn the page with the unused, non-dominant hand. Don’t move your head, keep it still.

BASIC PACING:

Pace your eyes so swiftly over a line that you don’t have time to form the sounds of the words or syllables in your throat.

The method is easy. You’ll replace all your bad habits with one easily learned one: You’ll use your pacing hand. Here’s how to break each of these habits automatically while increasing your reading speed.

You’ll read without sub-vocalizing, hearing it your mind.

To understand this concept, you must understand that you’ve got this nemesis, an inner voice who is reading to you in silent speech and then it goes into your brain. We did experiments in Hawaii, Texas, New Mexico, Florida, and elsewhere. It appears that those with the slowest speaking rates have naturally slow reading rates. With this method, your rate of speech won’t limit your reading speed. You can read as fast as you can think. What I am saying is you can read as fast as your mind can work.

Extend your index finger, close all others. Use you index finger as a beginner Speed reading student and run it under the line of type you are reading..

Extend your index finger, close all others. As you notice I’ve indicated a hand holding a pencil earlier to use for pacing. That can come later. Use you index finger as a beginner Speed reading student.

You’ll be reading twice as fast as you ever have. You’ll retain valuable information and increase your comprehension and improve your grades.
